Murakami Corporation (Head office: 11-5 Tenma-cho, Aoi-ku, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture; President/CEO: Taro Murakami Securities Code 7292), a manufacturer of Automotive Rearview Mirrors has received the Invention Incentive Award at the 2024 Kanto Regional Invention Awards sponsored by the Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation.

Invention:          Electric retractable visibility equipment for vehicles
Registration number:          Japanese Patent No. 6604733
Inventor:           Masahiro Motomiya, Division Manager, Automotive Solutions Division
                             Takayuki Miyazaki, Design Development Group
The D200 Power Fold Unit was first produced in 2015 and has been used in Toyota Motor Corporation's Prius, RAV4, and other vehicles. The ingenuity and innovation of the mechanism design, which suppresses the mechanical noise generated when folding and unfolding the door mirrors and prevents abnormal noise, was recognized as contributing to the automotive industry, where demand for noise reduction is increasing due to the shift to electric vehicles (EVs).

D200 Power Fold Unit
1.Background of the invention
A rearview mirror is a safety visual device that allows the driver to see side and rear of the vehicle to avoid accidents. Door mirrors are exterior parts that are exposed to harsh weather and vibrations, and therefore require high durability, including water resistance, heat resistance, and wind resistance. In addition, door mirrors have been equipped with features that improve safety and convenience, such as an electric folding function, mirror glass angle adjustment, blind spot detection, turn signals when turning right or left, ground footlights, and defrosting heaters.
As these become more electric and more functional, the number of components built into a compact housing is increasing, becoming more miniaturized, and becoming more highly integrated.
By combining mechanical design, circuit design, optical design, and material and mass production technology to meet the needs for "safety, security, and comfort," we have achieved a stable supply of high-quality products and contributed to the development of the automobile industry.
Furthermore, in recent years, as hybridization and EVs that combine automobile engines and electric motors progress, automobile parts are also required to be lightweight and quiet.
With the "D200 Electric Fold Unit," we have succeeded in dramatically improving noise reduction while maintaining performance and quality, despite the limited freedom in the layout and mechanism design inside the door mirror.

2.Future Activities
We place importance on acquiring intellectual property rights as part of our management strategy. On the occasion of this award, we will further promote the acquisition and utilization of intellectual property rights for automotive products, opt-electronics products, and new businesses, while further developing technologies for safety, security, and comfort.

3.Laureate comments
It is a great honor to receive this Invention Incentive Award. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the people involved for their efforts. “The D200 Power Fold Unit” was developed to provide customers with more comfortable use of the unit, as electric open/close function has become more frequent in recent years with the spread of it’s function linked to door lock mechanisms which are increasingly becoming standard equipment in automobiles. Based on our philosophy of "serving people," we will continue to devote ourselves every day to create products that contribute to a new level of "Visible and Perceptual Reassurance”.”

[Regional Invention Award]
The Regional Commendation for Invention is an award program of the Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation, established in 1921 with the aim of encouraging and nurturing inventions in each region, contributing to the improvement of science and technology and the promotion of local industries. The award is divided into eight regions (Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu), and is given to those who have completed outstanding inventions, devices, and designs, those who have made efforts to put inventions into practice, and those who have contributed to the guidance, encouragement, and development of inventions.
